I’ve been using Ouidad products since I was in high school and first started attempting to wear my hear naturally curly instead of frying it with my straightening. Since then, my hair has been through many iterations…long, short, really short (the pixie), and now back into a long, blunt bob. During the pixie grow out process, I pretty much always kept my hair straightened because I didn’t have enough hair to form full curls. Now that I have more length, I have definitely been rocking my natural hair more often!
Ouidad reached out to me and offered to send out their new Advanced Climate Control line to review, and also offered to send the line to one of you! I’ve worked with them in the past in a review of their Mongongo Oil, and they are a pretty wonderful company to work with… so of course I accepted. I was sent the Shampoo, Conditioner, Detangling Heat Spray, and Heat and Humidity Gel from Ouidad’s Advanced Climate Control line and overall I have been very impressed.
I have a combination of loose and classic curls naturally, that lack definition without styling and tend to get puffy and frizzy. In curly hair products, I look for some hydration, and major definition without the “crunch” from the gels and mousses that I remember from my teenage years.
The first thing I do when I plan on wearing my hair naturally curly is wash it– I mean it seems obvious, but getting it wet is important for re-setting the curl pattern. I know that some people swear by the not washing their hair or only using cleansing conditioners, but I prefer to wash mine. The one major characteristic that I look for in my shampoos is a sulfate-free formula since I have dry, colored hair and sulfates act essentially as detergents that can strip your hair. The Defrizzing Shampoo totally met the bill. It gives what I call a “soft” lather– enough to feel satisfying and like you are getting your hair clean, but not enough to totally dry it out. I actually am loving this formula for curly or styled hair days because it doesn’t leave me with puffy, staticky, textureless hair like many other shampoos do!
When I was first testing out the products a few weeks ago, I originally followed up washing with the Advanced Climate Control Defrizzing Conditioner. This is a very light conditioner that definitely doesn’t weigh hair down– perfect for someone with thinner hair. However, I found that I needed more moisture and a heavier conditioner. I incidentally found out that it is perfect to use for day 2, 3, and 4 hair! After styling one day when I want to get more wear out of my curls before washing, I hop in the shower, re-wet my hair, and use this conditioner on the lower 2/3 of my hair (and rinse). It is perfect for re-setting curls.
Ouidad also sent over two styling products. I’ll be honest here– I do not like the nozzle on the Detangling Heat Spray. Instead of misting over your hair, it squirts out in a concentrated area. I also did not find that it detangled my hair well. It is a very, very light moisture and protective spray. While it doesn’t detangle particularly well, it does seem to help with frizz. I use it by spraying about six to seven times in my palms and then distributing evenly through my wet hair.
The other product, and I think the one that makes the most difference in my curls, was the Heat and Humidity gel. This adds definition without feeling stiff, and also helps with the unwanted puff. While it worked well for me on its own, it is a game changing product when mixed with a creamy leave-in moisturizer. I found that a one-to-one ratio worked best for me! Here are the results on my air-dried hair:
Thank you so much to Ouidad for sending me these products to try out! They have absolutely moved into the front of my rotation for curly hair days– especially the shampoo and gel. You can find these items on the Ouidad website, Ulta, and Sephora.
